Centrifugal pumps are a device widely used in industrial fluid transport. They rely on the rotation of the impeller to generate centrifugal force to enable the liquid to obtain energy. According to the different structural installation methods, centrifugal pumps can be divided into horizontal centrifugal pumps and vertical centrifugal pumps. There are obvious differences in structural design, installation method, use scenario and maintenance costs of the two. Correct selection of centrifugal pump type is of great significance to improving system operation efficiency and reducing maintenance costs.

Structural features of horizontal centrifugal pump
The motor of the horizontal centrifugal pump is horizontally connected to the pump body through a coupling, and the entire equipment is installed on the base platform. The pump shaft is in a horizontal state, and the pump housing is mostly volute-shaped structure. Most horizontal pumps use single-suction or double-suction impeller designs, and can be configured with single-stage or multi-stage structures depending on the working conditions.
Horizontal centrifugal pumps are usually equipped with rolling bearings or sliding bearings, and have a variety of cooling and lubrication methods. The shaft seal part is often sealed with mechanical seals or packings for easy replacement and maintenance. The pump body usually adopts a split structure, which is convenient for on-site disassembly and maintenance. Most horizontal centrifugal pumps are equipped with pump seats and bases, which are firmly installed and have good operating stability.

Structural features of vertical centrifugal pump
The pump body of the vertical centrifugal pump is installed vertically, the motor is located above the pump, and the pump impeller is directly driven through the short shaft. The pump shaft is vertical, compact in structure and small footprint. Most vertical pumps use long shaft structures and are suitable for water pumping systems with low ground water levels.
Most of the impellers and pump housing of vertical centrifugal pumps adopt an integral cast design, and the bearings are usually arranged at the upper end. Cooling mainly depends on self-circulation or external water sources. The shaft seal structure is mainly mechanical sealing and has excellent sealing performance. The installation method of the pump is simplified, but it has high requirements for installation verticality and foundation stability.

Typical application scenarios of horizontal centrifugal pumps
Horizontal centrifugal pumps are widely used in petrochemical, electricity, metallurgy, municipal, construction water supply and other fields. Due to its smooth operation, mature structure and convenient maintenance, it is especially suitable for transporting clean water or lightly corrosive liquids with medium and low flow rates.
In industrial cooling circulation systems, boiler water supply systems, and oil conveying pipelines, horizontal multi-stage centrifugal pumps are widely used because of their high head, large flow rate and stable efficiency. In large-scale municipal water supply projects, the horizontal double suction centrifugal pump has become the first choice for long-distance water transfer due to its advantages of symmetrical water inlet and axial force balance.

Typical application scenarios of vertical centrifugal pumps
Vertical centrifugal pumps are mainly used in occasions where space is limited or equipment is dense, and are especially suitable for groundwater extraction, high-rise building pressurization, boiler water supply, air conditioning cooling circulation systems, etc. Its structure is compact and covers a small area, which facilitates the optimization of the layout of the computer room.
In deep well pumping, industrial cooling tower water replenishment, and fire-fighting boosting systems, vertical multi-stage centrifugal pumps are widely used for their good cavitation resistance and high head output advantages. Vertical pipe pumps are often used in building water supply and drainage systems, and are characterized by simple installation, quiet operation and small maintenance.
Differences in installation and maintenance
When installing horizontal centrifugal pumps, a special basic platform is required, and transportation and lifting requirements are high, but it is convenient for maintenance and replacement of consumable parts. Its axial structure facilitates maintenance of bearings and mechanical seals, and is especially suitable for systems that require frequent maintenance or long-term operation.
Vertical centrifugal pumps are flexible to install and can be installed directly on the pipeline without the need for a separate foundation, saving civil construction costs. Due to the compact structure and limited on-site maintenance space, some vertical pumps need to be lifted and disassembled as a whole, making the maintenance difficult relatively high.

Comparison of operational stability and efficiency
Because of its good structural symmetry, low center of gravity and stable operation, horizontal centrifugal pumps show better stability and life under high flow conditions. Multi-stage horizontal pumps have obvious advantages in head and efficiency, and are suitable for continuous operation.
Vertical centrifugal pumps are known for their rapid start-up, low vibration and low noise, and are especially energy-saving in small circulation systems. Its vertical structure can effectively reduce liquid residue, reduce start-up load, and increase system response speed.
